Internet of Things (IoT) and ServiceNow

IoT devices are devices connected to the internet. They range from internet connected fitness trackers and air-quality sensors to industrial devices like location beacons.

To understand IoT better, lets take an example of IoT within the ServiceNow Platform. An internet connected device provides sensor data about a virtual fuel tank. As the virtual fuel tank drains, it sends status information to ServiceNow. ServiceNow then creates an Incident and assigns it to an agent to refill the fuel tank or since it is a virtual fuel tank, the refill is also automated.

IoT and ServiceNow

IoT has its own advantage and disadvantage. It improves the workforce productivity, enhances customer experience, optimize the process and offers remote monitoring and control.

Despite these benefits of IoT, there are several potential security issues that businesses should be aware of. Such as, oversharing of sensitive data and ineffective protection from hackers.

Having said that, there are steps which businesses can practice to get away from these security threats. Simple steps to improve security are to have stronger passwords, improved authentication/authorization and enhanced encryption etc. All these functions are supported out of the box by ServiceNow.

As more and more devices connect and operate online, they generate more and more data. Handling this data efficiently will thus become more and more important. Rather than using in-house servers and data storage, most organizations are switching to data processing in the cloud. The ServiceNow cloud digital platform is scalable and ServiceNow offers machine learning, predictive intelligence to master big data and strong integration platform to integrate the collected data with relevant systems and processe.
